Mercy for Murderers
Passage: Exodus 20:1-2, 13, Genesis 9:5-7, Matthew 5:21-26
I. The Commandment
What does the heart of the sixth commandment and its penalty for breaking it (Gen.9) teach us about the sanctity of human life?
II. The Deeper Commandment
What did Jesus teach about this commandment? What is the DNA of murder? How and why do we continually break it? How is this ultimately a worship problem?
III. Keeping the Commandment
There is mercy for murderers in the cross of Christ, which saves and transforms us into agents of life. Each commandment covers both inward attitudes and outward actions; they not only prohibit a negative action, but imply a positive. What does it look like for us as Christians to fully keep this commandment?
